what to do if yous forget your emergency inhaler

emptyskies13 profile image

and then it's happened, I got to work two hours ago and realized I forgot my inhaler. I never exit the house without one but I was in a rush and it slipped my listen. unfortunately I work on an island and take a ferry to piece of work then going home to get it isn't an option.

I already don't feel great, I'thousand irritable, tired, cough and it feels like I'm animate through a straw. It's non unbearable yet and I'm just trying to go through it and not brand a fuss.

If anyone has any advice on what they do when they dont have any ventolin then I would really appreciate it. And then far staying calm and not hyperventilating is the best I can practise to avert having to make a scene.

Step one - ask if anyone y'all piece of work with has a blueish inhaler. If they do borrow theirs (use the antibac to make clean mouthpiece etc)

Pace 2 - if they don't, endeavor to find a chemist's that is open up and explicate the situation. They may be able to result an emergency inhaler, or if zero else help organise help!

Step 3 - if you can't observe a chemist's call 111. They tin arrange for an out of hours GP appt to issue one, or may suggest urgent care

Step 4 - if you feel worse go to an urgent care/a&e or call out an Ambo (who can give you a neb if it is needed

Don't panic. Keep calm. Let people around yous know what's going on and then they can assistance

Outset the steps now, before things escalate to *NEEDING* an ambo

Hope this helps!

I'm going to let my coworker know. we don't have a pharmacy on the island and then I'thou hoping I'll just be able to get in through my shift until I can get home.

I'll definitely try to stay calm though, I know that panicking volition just make information technology worse, thank you

Depending where you are/your workplace, endeavour checking the first aid box. I know sometimes (in cases where in that location isn't a chemist's piece of cake admission to medics like off shore etc) they may stick in more than 'normal' emergency meds, like epi pens and blue inhalers

(Also, not for now obvs, simply maybe some other 24-hour interval bring a spare emergency inhaler and leave information technology at piece of work so this doesn't happen again 😉)

How are you? Did you lot manage to get yourself sorted safely?

This happened to me once...other than I just alive iii minutes walk from my piece of work place. There was an evening staff meeting and I walked the whole 3 infinitesimal walk...all flat ground. I was absolutely fine when I left& by the time I arrived at work I couldn't breathe. Then realised I had forgotten my blue! I asked if anyone had 1 and fortunately someone a new one on them. I needed 8/10 puffs before I could walk home once again.

Think all of the above advice is super!

I would exit an inhaler at work in my drawer. Or if you desk-bound share take the same bag to work each day and keep an inhaler in that bag.

I tend to have inhalers in coats, numberless, any affair i might utilize i have inhaler in so i know i have one handy. Accept you tried a paper bag meet if that helps you, take a spare and leave it in a draw or your locker if yous have one so if you forget then y'all got i at work but keep on centre on expire dates.

I completely agree with communication about keeping spares where yous tin (peculiarly at work, if the pharmacy isn't an choice where you piece of work) only keeping an middle on the expiry date.

Nonetheless just wanted to jump in here about the paper handbag comment. Pipswhips - not sure if y'all meant breathing into a paper bag if you don't have an inhaler, but this actually isn't recommended for asthma. It's often suggested for panic attacks (though I think other techniques are now preferred for that), only asthma is not panic, though some symptoms (such every bit fast animate) can happen in both, and some people get a bit panicky when asthma is playing up. However, even if asthma is making someone panicky, the newspaper handbag will not replace their inhaler and it might make things worse for the asthma.

If you do find asthma makes you panicky, at that place are things you can practice like grounding and trying to slow downwardly your breathing (Asthma United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland suggests counting to 5 on each in jiff and out breath, on this page: asthma.org.united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland/advice/manage...

It was suggested to past consultant years agone to me when I was bad.

I remember ideas may have inverse since then. They now know that astringent asthma attacks tin can cause co2 memory, and this tin lead to fatalities. Using a paper handbag to breathe into can crusade co2 retention to get more likely, as you terminate upwards animate in more co2

This is why it'southward not advised anymore for asthma, as we breathe faster to effort and go on o2 levels at a safe level. Feet tends to hyperventilate and cause o2 sats to go high (and co2 to go to depression), which is why sometimes bag breathing may have been advised (just over again pretty sure that's not suggested either nowadays)

Anyhow hope that explains things 😅

As standard I accept an inhaler in my purse, ane at piece of work, one in my swimming bag.... I make information technology so I never have to remember 1. I learnt the hard way.

I know this doesn't aid at present but on the odd occasion when I've needed to furnish a few inhalers GPS have been more than happy to. I suspect your dr will be happy to give yous a couple extra to become y'all going

Potent java is not nearly as skilful every bit Ventolin but "might" help. Is there a pharmacy on the island yous could work with?

I absolutely needed to have my phone with me in instance asthma kicked upwardly. So I put it in a case on a chain around my cervix. I also put my two flat keys on it so I couldn't lock my apartment without that chain.

That manner am also probable to call up to change it over (with everything else) into different pocketbook.

I also employ a nebuliser and go along ane at dwelling house and ane in the car. Have to confess haven't used one in auto recently but keep new batteries and up to engagement nebulous simply in case. Helps for piece of listen.

Information technology is a very practiced question and a scary situation. I take had that happen before. Besides, the Ventolin rescue inhaler doesn't take a counter on information technology...and I have had times at piece of work where I had my rescue with me, but it was empty. So at present I have a fill-in to that backup. :) Hope you are alright.

You tin go Ventolin in Accuhaler form where open up information technology and just breathe in.

These have a counter so always know how much in and hold then breathe normal.

Exactly same drug just different format. I discover information technology easier to employ than the traditional way where you accept to brand certain the technique is right
